TIMBER MATS USED TO SET UP CHRISTMAS TREE IN NEWPORT BEACH, CA

Whoever imagined mats could deliver so much Christmas joy? According to a report from International Cranes and Specialized Transport, timber mats in fact were utilized to erect a 100-foot tall white fur tree at a shopping center in Newport Beach, California this November

Setting up the tree involved utilizing a crane, with its outriggers set atop a layer of timber mats for proper stabilization. The tree was then lifted vertically, with the crew using a chainsaw to cut a plug off so the base could fit into a hole in the ground.

Once lowered into position, the trunk was placed into the hole. From there, the crew on the ground ensured the tree was straight and placed timber shims around the trunk for stabilization.

The entire installation reportedly took just under an hour, with Bragg Companies handling the project.

Fashion Island, the shopping center in Newport Beach, California, installs a white fur every year, with a lighting celebration following soon after. To check out what the finished installation of the tree looks like, visit the Visit Newport Beach website.

Timber mats can prove extremely useful for crane stabilization, whether they’re used to stabilize a crane’s outriggers, or used for the crane itself to set atop of.
